Tobiano Coat Traits

Variations of Tobiano

Tobiano Coat Traits

Tobiano is a white-spotting pattern caused by the KIT gene, producing distinct, well-defined white markings that typically cross the topline of the horse.

Tobiano Traits

Variations of Tobiano

Tobiano Coat Traits

A Tobiano Paint Horse generally exhibits:

  • White markings that cross the topline (back) between the withers and tail
White legs, often all four, below the knees and hocks
Rounded or oval white patches with smooth, crisp edges
Dark coloration on the head, similar to a solid horse (facial markings such as blaze or star may be present but are not extreme)
A vertically oriented pattern, giving a balanced, symmetrical appearance

Variations of Tobiano

Variations of Tobiano

Variations of Tobiano

While all Tobianos share the core characteristics above, visual expression can vary widely.

 Classic Tobiano

  • Large, clearly defined white areas
    White crosses the back
Balanced distribution of color and white
    2. Minimal Tobiano
  • Limited white expression
May resemble a solid horse with high white legs
Still genetically Tobiano (often confirmed by DNA testing)
    3. Maximum Tobiano
  • Predominantly white horse
Color is often limited to the head, chest, flanks, or tail area
Tobiano characteristics are still visible in pattern placement

Tobiano Color Combinations

The Tobiano pattern can occur with any base coat color, including:

  • Black Tobiano
    Bay Tobiano
    Chestnut / Sorrel Tobiano
    Brown Tobiano
    Buckskin Tobiano
    Palomino Tobiano
Gray Tobiano (pattern visible at birth; fades with age)
    Smoky Black Tobiano
Cream, Dun, or Silver variations combined with Tobiano

Compare Patterns

Tobiano should not be confused with:

  • Overo (frame, splash, or sabino): white does not typically cross the topline
Tovero: a combination of Tobiano and Overo characteristics

Genetic Factors

Colors & Patterns

Compare Patterns

Tobiano is dominant—only one copy of the gene is required
A Tobiano parent can produce Tobiano offspring
DNA testing can confirm Tobiano in minimal-expression horses

Traits of Overo

Traits of Overo

Overo is a collective term used to describe several Paint Horse white-spotting patterns that do not typically cross the topline. Overo patterns are genetically and visually distinct from Tobiano and may appear alone or in combination with other patterns.

Traits of Overo

Traits of Overo

Traits of Overo

 Overo-patterned horses commonly display:

  • White markings that originate on the belly or sides
White that rarely crosses the topline
    Irregular, jagged, or splash-like edges
Extensive white on the face, often bald-faced
Legs that are dark or partially white, rather than fully white
A more horizontal distribution of white

Types of Overo

Traits of Overo

Types of Overo

Frame Overo : Genetic source EDNRB gene.

 Visual characteristics:

  • White appears framed by darker color
Horizontal white patches along the sides
    Dark topline and dark legs
    Bald or apron face common
White usually does not cross the back
    Important genetic note:
  • Two copies of the Frame gene cause Lethal White Syndrome (LWS)
    Responsible breeding requires DNA testing

Splash White

Color Combinations

Types of Overo

Genetic source: MITF / PAX3 genes

Visual characteristics:

  • Horse appears “dipped in white paint”
    White legs, belly, and face
    Blue eyes common
Crisp, clean edges to white markings
White may approach or lightly cross the topline in some cases

Color Variations

Color Combinations

Color Combinations

 Genetic source: KIT gene variants

Visual characteristics:

  • High white stockings with irregular edges
    Belly spots or roaninng
    Extensive facial white
    Lacy or roaned borders
Can range from minimal to nearly all white
Note: Sabino expression can sometimes resemble Tobiano or Splash but lacks consistent topline crossing.
