How to Become an ATOA Judge

American Tobiano Overo Association (ATOA)

The American Tobiano Overo Association is committed to maintaining fair, knowledgeable, and consistent judging standards across all ATOA-recognized events. Individuals interested in becoming an ATOA Judge must meet the following criteria and complete the approval process.

Judge Eligibility

Join as an ATOA Judge

Join as an ATOA Judge

 Be a current ATOA member in good standing
Be 18 years of age or older
Demonstrate substantial knowledge of Paint Horse conformation, color genetics, and performance disciplines
Have prior experience in one or more of the following:
Judging (breed or performance)
Training or coaching
Breeding or owning Paint Horses
Competing in sanctio

 Be a current ATOA member in good standing
Be 18 years of age or older
Demonstrate substantial knowledge of Paint Horse conformation, color genetics, and performance disciplines
Have prior experience in one or more of the following:
Judging (breed or performance)
Training or coaching
Breeding or owning Paint Horses
Competing in sanctioned horse shows
Maintain a reputation for professionalism, ethics, and impartiality

Application Process

To apply, candidates must submit:

A completed ATOA Judges Application
A resume or summary of equine experience
References (if requested by the Judges Committee)
Agreement to follow all ATOA Rules, Ethics, and Code of Conduct
Applications are reviewed by the ATOA Judges Committee

Complete ATOA Judge Education

Pass a rules and standards review

Demonstrate understanding of: 

ATOA breed standards

Registry distinctions

Performance and/or conformation judging criteria

Welfare and Stockmanship Expectations

Continuing education may be required to maintain judging status. 

Ethics & Conduct

ATOA Judges are expected to: 

Judge fairly and without favoritism

avoid conflicts of interest

Uphold horse welfare at all times

Represent ATOA in a professional manner
